2017 Attersee 4 With seven races in just two days, this year’s edition of the D-One Attersee Trophy held at Union Yacht Club Attersee provided an excellent opportunity to (im-)prove one’s sailing skills whilst admiring the beautiful scenery of lake Attersee and enjoying the tasteful Austrian food and beer, which was served at the social events of the regatta.

In 2017, the Austrian D-One fleet grew by four boats therefore the event management was optimistic to break last year’s competitor record (16 boats). Unfortunately, some Austrian sailors were absent due to their well-earned family holidays and Belgian sailor Phillipe Bogaerts suffered a knee injury just two days before the event. Nevertheless, we welcomed a nice fleet of 10 boats at lake Attersee.

The weather on Thursday (the day before the event) was rainy and cold, but on Friday the sun and a consistent thermal breeze of force 2 came through and so the fleet went out after the opening ceremony and completed four races in a row. Event Manager Felix Hofinger scored a bullet in the first race, closely followed by Marek Bachtik from Czech Republic and local sailor Jakob Lindner. In races two and three Bachtik dominated the starts and offered no passing lanes for the rest of the fleet following closely behind.

AUT 0113 The D-One Austrian Open 2017 – “Wolfgangseepreis” took place at Union Yacht Club Wolfgangsee. A remarkable fleet 14 D-Ones from three nations, including a record number of 10 Austrian boats, gathered at lake Wolfgangsee for a practice day, followed by three days of racing.

Practice day offered perfect sailing conditions with beautiful weather and a thermal breeze of Force 3. Five Boats including our guest from Germany, who travelled for almost 12 hours to take part in the event, enjoyed a nice training session out on the lake.

Day one of the championship started calm but around 2 p.m. the expected cloudy front, accompanied by strong and very gusty winds from the west arrived and the fleet went out for race number one. The gusty gradient wind, which is also influenced by the surrounding mountains, guaranteed some exciting racing but also caused numerous spectacular capsizes from everybody in the fleet. Nevertheless, three fair but very exhausting races were completed on day one before we retired to the club restaurant for some lasagne accompanied by free beer, sponsored by Austrian D-One sailor Toni Eigenstuhler.

DSC 1032 16 D-Ones gathered at the beautiful setting of Lake Attersee (UYCAs) for three days of racing. Sailors from Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, England, Czech Republic and local sailors of Lake Attersee, Lake Wolfgangsee and Lake Neusiedlersee made up the fleet.On practice day seven D-Ones enjoyed a nice training session in Force 2-3 conditions in the afternoon thermal breeze. With an excellent weather forecast sailors retired after some wonderful Austrian food and local Zipfer beer.

The first day of racing was a patient wait as the morning southerly breeze fought against the thermal "Rosenwind". Eventually later in the day the fleet launched and started race one in a light force 2. Sadly, at the windward mark, the wind died, forcing the race officer to abandon the race. The fleet retired to the Yacht Club bar for some refreshment and lovely Wiener Schnitzel provided by the host Union Yacht Club Attersee.

Day two started calm and very hot….

IMG 20160704 WA0003 The first Austrian D-One event in 2016 took place on lake Wolfgangsee this weekend (2.-3.7.2016). A fleet of 10 boats, eight Austrian and two from Czech Republic took part in the regatta. Four of the Austrian sailors already competed in the 2016 D-One Europeans at Lipno CZE and were highly motivated to show their skills on home waters.

On the first day nice weather and strong winds with 4-6bft allowed two beautiful races to be completed before a storm with lots of rain forced the race committee to finish the day. On Sunday the weather unfortunately did not allow any more races and therefore the result from Saturday became the final result.

Marek Bachtik (CZE) was able to win the series with a start to finish win in the first race and a very close second place in the second race. Second place goes to Matthias Böckl (UYCWg) with a win in the second race, and third place with a second place in race 1 to Felix Hofinger (UYCAs).

The next Austrian event the D-One Attersee Trophy takes place on lake Attersee from 09.09.-11.09.2016, the weekend before the Goldcup at Garda, so perfect for training. We already received entries from Germany, Czech Republic and Great Britain and would be very pleased to welcome many more international guests from Hungary, Italy, Switzerland or any other country!
