2016 is building up to be a fantastic year of D-One sailing.  We have some great regattas lined up for you in some of the D-One's favourite locations and also some exciting new events.

IMG 0009This year the European Championships will once again be hosted by the Czechs on Lake Lipno at Yacht Club Jestrabi.  It really is a fantastic base for sailng event.  The club has a relaxed atmosphere with camping or motorhome facitilities right next to the launching beach with parking for cars and trailers also.  The site has cabins available to hire with a small cafe and pub or there is a very reasonably priced hotel across the road.  The race course is not far from the launch which means only a short time after you cross the finish line you can be relaxing with a beer and forget about that terrible start or vica versa you can be relaxing with a nice beer with only short distance to get out to the race course to make that terrible start (I think that is the normal Czech tradition)!  A full social will be organised at the club with often a local brewary donating a keg of beer in the evening.  The  event will take place from 16th June to 19th June with training races organised on the thursday.  NOR and registration is available here: http://www.camplipno.com/d-one-european-championship-2016

The Inland nationals and UK end-of-season event held in light conditions was a 3-horse competition between Tyler Harmsworth (ex Phantom Champion) making his first appearance on the circuit, Ben Falat and Tim Garvin; these three were then joined by Paul Birbeck when it was a touch windier on Sunday;  newcomer to the class and sporting that famous Pink Number-9 Gordon Davies, learned a lot about how to sail a D-One.

This year Czech D-one national championship was sailed on Lake Lipno from 28th to 30th august. Among 18 boats entered to this regatta including competitors from Great Britain, Hungary, Austria and Switzerland.

The town of Travemunde pulled out all the stops with fireworks, laser light shows, beach bars, and of course the compulsory sausage and beer stalls that come with such a prestigious German regatta.  The weather was a mixed bag of flat calm, 30deg sunshine, to 40kt squalls with electrical storms.

The conditions couldn’t have been more perfect for the first race with full south coast sunshine and a 15 + kt sea breeze building from the southwest having fought off a gusty northwest gradient.  With the pre race nerves pumping adrenalin to maximum levels all helms were eager to test each other’s finely honed fitness and intelligent boat handling skills as the starting gun went.

ben grafham12 D Ones gathered at Grafham over the weekend of 13th and 14th of June for a pre-nationals warm-up regatta.  Saturday served up a light breeze for race one and Simon Hawkes read the shifts well to take the race.  The race officer attempted to get the second race away but the breeze died completely and the fleet headed for the bar and an excellent evening meal serveed up by the sailing club.

The weather forecasters predicted 'Dogs off chains' at the start of the week running up to the 2015 POSH event (Paignton Open for Single Handers) but as the week went on, the predictions eased and on the day Torbay served up another weekend of fabulous sailing. The D-One fleet returned to this ever popular event for the 3rd time and their first open of the year sponsored in 2015 by Spinlock, supplying their new “Wing“ buoyancy aid as prizes.

We are looking forward to the upcoming Gold Cup at the Travemunde Woche regatta on the 23rd - 26th July.  This should be a super 4 day event set amongst the festival activities and entertainment that takes place throughout the week on the white sandy shores of the Baltic.  On the water we are expecting fantastic, well organised racing with the added enjoyment of an evening of short races on the spectator course in the river.   Registration is open now through the Travemunde Woche website and information and direct links to Notice of Race is also on our Gold Cup event listing.

Happy New Year to all sailors.  2014 had proven to be another successful sailing season for the D-One class and 2015 looks set to be even better.

In 2014 both the Europeans and Gold Cup were sailed in a variety of tricky sailing conditions at Brightlingsea, UK and Alassio, Italy.  Both were won by Nick Craig, positioning himself as the man to beat in 2015.  Throughout the fleets close battles were won and lost on the tightest of margins showing the competitiveness of the class.  The D-One International Association would like to thank all competitors and supporters over the last year for their contribution in helping the D-One family grow and prosper.

The 2015 season is hotting up to be another fun packed year.  For those who can travel we have our first Gold Cup organised in Germany, during the renowned Travemunde Week regatta.  The action should be exhilarating both on and off the water and a fantastic opportunity to show case the class at a large event of this kind.  It can only push the class to bigger and greater things.  For the Europeans we return to Lago del Garda, a spiritual home of the D-One, for what we hope will be a classic regatta in the stunning location.  This event is sandwiched between the Czech nationals in Lipno and Austrian Nationals at Attersee.  The UK nationals will be held in June this year at Highcliffe on the south coast, a popular training ground for many Olympian.

For a full list of events please visit our event calendar.  We actively encourage people to support all events they can.  We will to help point you in the right direction if transport shares or charter boats are required through Devoti dealers or various national associations.

All the best for the new season,

Humphrey Carter
